Flag Retirement Box

boxLimerick Township is proud to offer a Flag Retirement Box for the respectful collection of worn, torn, and tattered American flags. In keeping with the United States Flag Code, this initiative provides a dignified alternative to discarding old flags.

The retirement box was thoughtfully constructed by Boy Scout Michael Maltman, Limerick Troop 230, as part of his Eagle Scout project, and it now stands ready to accept U.S. flags that are no longer fit to fly. Collected flags will be entrusted to local Scout troops, who will retire them with the honor and ceremony they deserve throughout the year. Located in the front vestibule of the Limerick Township building, this box will be available 24/7 for residents.

The American flag is a powerful symbol of our nation's unity, history, and ideals. By placing your unserviceable flag in this retirement box, you help ensure it will be retired with respect and according to tradition.

Let us continue to show our appreciation for the values our flag represents—dignity, freedom, and patriotism.

Federal Flag Code

The Federal Flag Code prescribes the proper display of and respect for the United States flag. Each state has its own flag law. Here are a few key points of the code:

  • The flag should be displayed only from sunrise to sunset, however, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
  • The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
  • The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed.
  • The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
  • The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
