The Limerick Township Historical Society was
founded in 1984 by the former Limerick Township Bicentennial
Committee, which wanted to compile information and publish
a book to preserve the history of Limerick Township. In 1987,
the newly formed Society leased the Isaac Hunsberger House
from Mr. Michael Crouse, who later presented it to the historical
society on September 28, 1994.
Many interesting items have been donated to
the Society, such as a crank telephone, pieces of Medinger
pottery, a Peter Rothelmel Battle of Gettysburg print, a telescope
inscribed with the name "Washington Hood" and many
other items of local historic interest. Our displays contain
old, as well as new, quilts and period garments and accessories.
The museum room, which houses these displays, is changed every
couple of months. There is also a library that houses many
interesting books and genealogies of local families, histories,
pictures and other documents to browse through. More information
can be found in our history book "A Journey through Time."
This is available for purchase at the Historical Society for
$22.00, as well as other interesting items relating to local
history.
The Isaac Hunsberger House, headquarters of
the Limerick Township Historical Society, was put on the National
Register of Historical Places on June 22, 2000 and was the
first such structure in Limerick Township to be giving this
recognition. This achievement took four years time and a lot
of hard work.
The Society meets the second Monday of each
month at the township building on Ridge Pike at 7:30 p.m.
Two of the most popular meetings are the school reunion and
a version of the antique road show, both occurring in the
fall. Anyone may attend the meetings as there are many good
programs of interest to community members.
The Society headquarters
at 545 W. Ridge Pike is open every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m.
until 4:00 p.m. and every Sunday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Stop by and visit. We would like to see you!
