Permit Information

Residential Construction Permits

Permits are required for the following:

  • New buildings and additions
  • Garages, barns, sheds, and other accessory structures
  • Alterations or renovations including basements
  • Decks, if 30 inches above grade
  • Swimming pools and hot tubs, both in ground and above ground
  • Roofing work including new roofs or replacement roofs
  • Plumbing, electrical, heating, and air conditioning work
  • Solar installations

Non Residential Construction Permits

Permits are required for the following:

  • New buildings and additions
  • Alterations or renovations to existing space including tenant fit out
  • Plumbing, electrical, heating, and air conditioning work
  • Roofing work including new roofs and replacement roofs
  • Solar installations
  Permits are not required for the following:
  • Fences less than 6-feet high
  • Residential swing sets or play equipment
  • Decks, if less than 30 inches above grade. However, these will require a zoning permit.
  • Retaining walls less than 4-feet high
  • Sidewalks or walkways not located within the public street right-of-way
  • Temporary inflatable swimming pools containing less than 24-inches of water
  
Use & Occupancy Permits
Use and Occupancy Permits are required for the following:
  • Alterations, which include new or expanded outdoor display
  • Change in use of a structure, land, or change in use of a non-conforming use
  • New construction
  • Addition of a dwelling unit to existing home, including in-law suites
  • Temporary uses such as carnivals and seasonal sales of flowers, fireworks and Christmas trees
  • Tenant Fit-Outs: non-residential change in occupancy, owner or tenant
Use and Occupancy Permits are not required for residential resale. View the Use and Occupancy Permits for Residential Resale Procedures (PDF) for more information. However, if the dwelling is serviced by public sewer, you will need to contact the email Sewer Department for required certification prior to settlement.

Annual Registrations
Annual registrations are required for the following activities:
  • Contractor registration
  • In-Law suites
  • Residential rental properties
